5 Tips To Deal With Dry Skin

Dry skin is more than just an inconvenience. Pay close attention before it’s too late. Leaving it unchecked will cause your skin to become chapped and can lead to open sores and infection. Here are some tips to combat dry skin.

  1. Oatmeal bath. Oatmeal is excellent for soothing dry, itchy skin. Make sure bath water is warm, not hot. Sprinkle 1 cup of oats under running water. Once bath is filled get in and soak for 10-15 minutes. Afterward pat your skin dry and apply a good moisturizer.
  1. Use a thicker cream, preferably one that comes in a jar. The more liquid lotions (the ones found in pump bottles) tend to have more water content and are thinner. Body creams, which usually come in a jar, tend to be richer and are designed to keep in moisture.
  1. Time to exfoliate. When dry skin starts to get flaky it appears whitish on your skin. This is also known as ash and is a sign that it’s time to exfoliate. The purpose of exfoliation is to slough away dead skin, unclog pores and to brighten dull skin.
  1. Drink water. It is a know fact that whatever is going on inside you, will influence your skin. This is the time to avoid alcohol and caffeine which are known diuretics. You need to keep your hydration up as much as possible.
  1. Dress for it. When the weather is cold, bundle up. Wearing gloves will help keep your hands from getting chapped. A scarf is also a good idea and can be a fashion statement. If you are out in the driving wind you can pull it up to protect your face.
  1. Use a moisturizing face mask. Along with exfoliating, you also need to moisturize. An effective mask can be made by pureeing half of an avocado and mixing it with a teaspoon of olive oil and a tablespoon of honey. Apply to a clean face and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Wipe off gently, rinse with tepid water and pat dry. Follow up with a good moisturizer.

Working these tips into your beauty routine will have your skin looking its best in no time. Winter can be very hard on our skin, so while we wait for spring (which is almost here) do your best to look your best. Take care of your skin and be good to yourself.
