I started using (then subsequently making) natural skin care products because I want to be good to myself and my family. I started looking for bamboo clothing to wear because I wan to be good to the environment. I started to look into bamboo clothing and towels for our home and realized isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Bamboo is a highly re-newable resource that doesn't require a huge amount of pesticides, fertilizer or water. It is adding the the economic success of farmers in China. The fabrics produced can be used in so many applications like clothing, towels, jackets, etc. There is a down side though (isn't there always?). Unlike wool or flax, which is spun from raw fibres, bamboo's chemical-based hydrolysis-alkalization process that turns the plant into a spinnable fibre which is then turned into fabric, is hard on the environment.
The question then, "is bamboo more eco-friendly then non-organic cotton, or rayon"? With the processing that the bamboo must undertake can it still be labelled a natural fibre or a natural product or even green? Do the pros out weigh the cons? I'd like to hear your feedback on the subject. Please leave a comment below.
